A 53,000m2 distribution centre in Fontana, California was completed this week and uses ammonia in the state-of-the-art refrigeration system to focus on energy-efficiency, sustainability and safety.
The ammonia refrigeration system in the new food storage and distribution centre at the US West Coast was specifically designed to combine environmental considerations with energy-efficiency. According to a press release from the engineering and construction team on the ground, C&L Refrigeration, the “state-of-the-art project” could save up to $300,000 (around €222,000) in energy by implementing multiple energy efficiency measures.

Ammonia refrigeration system: facts & figures
  • Over 140,000 square feet (ca. 14,000m2) of 34°F-36°F (1,11 - 2,22°C) refrigerated area
  • There included a main 136,000 sq. ft. (ca. 12,600m2) refrigerated warehouse space with numerous 30-feet (9m) high continuous aisles that are each themselves 360 ft. (110m) long
  • 149,000 sq. ft. (ca. 14,000m2) of 65°F (ca.18°C) conditioned area
  • 223,000 sq. ft. (ca. 20,700m2) of dry storage

Besides its energy-efficiency features, the press release states that the environmentally-friendly refrigeration system uses ammonia refrigerant because of its sustainability as it compliments and supports the many organic products that will be cooled in the warehouse.

More energy features

The refrigeration system also includes multiple energy-efficiency features such as variable frequency drives (VFDs) on the lead compressor and condenser fans, premium efficiency motors, floating head pressure based on ambient wet-bulb temperature, floating suction pressure controls, and high-efficiency air units that use minimum fan input power. Other key energy efficiency measures include increased wall and roof insulation R values, and motor sensors for lighting controls.
