The replacement of existing CFC with ammonia chillers in two public buildings will save 38,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent. Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH in association with the Ministry of Environment in Mauritius is currently implementing a project that aims to convert chillers in large public buildings from fluorinated to ammonia refrigerant and provide training for engineers and service technicians on operation and maintenance of ammonia systems. The €1.2 million project that is set for completion by the end of the year is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety The project The project assists the Ministry of Environment of Mauritius with information and technical assistance to facilitate the decision making in favour of introducing natural refrigerants in central air-conditioning systems through:
Designed to demonstrate the feasibility of ammonia chillers in a tropical climate and the associated enhanced energy efficiency, the project may be replicated elsewhere and thus facilitate the transfer of this environmentally friendly technology to other countries in the region. |
