Industry rediscovery of ammonia

Although industry has rediscovered the big potential of ammonia as a refrigerant, Gartner’s refrigerant of choice has always been NH₃. Its proven higher efficiency combined with its environmental advantages of being devoid of ozone-depleting or global warming characteristics convinces the client base of the company, such as Target, U.S. Foodservice, Kemps and C&S Wholesale Grocers.

In the mid-1960’s, Gartner Refrigeration installed the first and largest ammonia refrigeration storage facility of its kind in the Upper Midwest. This ammonia refrigeration and piping for twin 60,000-ton ammonia storage tanks at Central Farmer's Fertilizer was only the beginning for decades of experiences in designing and implementing ammonia refrigeration-based systems that set the pace in operation efficiency and safety.

In 2008, Gartner Refrigeration installed a state-of-the-art energy efficient ammonia refrigeration system for the new Stater Brothers 650,000 sq. ft. Distribution Center in San Bernardino, California.
