A project that replaced an old chilled water system with one that uses R717 in the Netherlands, is among the award winning projects that realise significant energy and cost savings as well as environmental gains under Xerox Corporation’s 16th annual Earth Awards.
Xerox Corporation, a world leading document management technology and services enterprise has under its 16th annual Earth Awards honoured 20 projects from around the globe, including one that replaced an old system with a new one using ammonia refrigerant. The project was selected from a total of 50 submissions that the company received from 16 of its global facilities.
The 20 award winning projects collectively totaled $7.3 million in cost savings, more than 1.3 million pounds in waste elimination, and 500,000 KWH in energy reduction, demonstrating that what is good for the environment is also good for business.
The ammonia winning project
Among the winning projects: the replacement of an old chilled water system with one that uses natural refrigerant R717 in Venray, Netherlands. Accordingly, greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 130,000 kg in only six months, while it is estimated that Xerox will benefit from a yearly energy reduction of 300,000 KWh and cost savings of $15,000.
The company’s policy regarding refrigerants
Although the company does not have yet in place a policy to phase out high global warming substances, it already in 1992 established the “Xerox Ozone Depleting Substances Policy” to which all Xerox operations worldwide need to conform. As a result, Xerox is nearing a complete phase-out of ozone depleting substances used as refrigerants, with just one remaining operation using a small quantity (2 lbs.) of R-11.
