Star Refrigeration has supplied an energy efficient ammonia process cooling plant for a manufacturing site of FUJIFILM, the world leading manufacturer of colorants used in printers and copiers, in Scotland. State of the art refrigeration and computerised controls ensure that the materials manufactured meet quality standards.
Star Refrigeration designed and installed a low temperature ammonia water-cooled chiller for Fujifilm Imaging Colorants (FFIC) site at Grangemouth, Scotland, where colorants for ink jet and toner cartridges used in printers and copiers are being produced. The ammonia chiller provides energy efficient operation at varying process heat loads and supplies rapid cooling to reactor jackets on a number of new process reactors. The plant provides accurate and responsive temperature control of key processing steps, ensuring, therefore that the materials manufactured meet strict quality standards.
The plant, which cools 156m
3/hr of ethylene glycol/water solution from –17ºC to –20ºC, is designed to meet a peak process reactor heat load of 430kW for less than one hour, a sustained operating load of 350kW and a normal operating duty of 20-160kW. It is located externally, adjacent to the main manufacturing building and features:
- natural refrigerant R717
- three screw compressors that enable the chiller to provide excellent energy efficiency at part load
- low refrigerant charge plate heat exchangers
- a horizontal surge drum
- two fixed speed primary glycol pumps
- speed drive motors on two secondary glycol pumps that enable further energy savings by allowing the flow to be varied according to cooling demand
- Star Refrigeration’s patented TELSTAR computerised control system
- a low noise acoustic enclosure, where the compressors are located
