A new distribution centre being built by fruit, vegetable and exotics importer Hillfresh International features a NH₃/CO₂ cascade refrigeration system that will provide for 21 cold storage units and 7,500 pallet spaces, while minimising the ammonia refrigerant charge.

Centrally situated within Freshport Rijnmond, which is the fruit and vegetables centre for the Netherlands, construction of the 11,500m² distribution centre is set for completion by the end of the year.

The distribution centre will feature NH₃/CO₂ cascade refrigeration technology, which compared to conventional refrigerating solutions reduces the system’s ammonia charge by almost 90%, improving safety and making the system more environmentally-friendly at the same time. Safety is further enhanced, with ammonia refrigerant being confined in the machinery room - completely separate from the cooling area.
